Chantilly 3d July 1771

Dear Brother

I have informed Mr Stephen Chilton of your good intentions with regard to him, that you were inclined to furnish him a Mates berth. In consequence of this, he now goes home in the Liberty. Added to Mr. Chilton’s being our Countryman, he understands Navigation well, and has the reputation of being an exceeding good Seaman. He certainly deserves encouragement, and I know that Merit will always meet with your countenance.

Your affectionate brother.
