Chantilly, in Virga. 2d. March 1774
Dear Brother
Inclosed I send you an order on yourself in my favor for £16.10 Sterlg. drawn by Mr. Charles Bell of Fauquier. This Gentleman is a Tenant to <mutilated> in that County, and has good possessions in Slaves <mutilated> &c. He makes good Crops, but money being scarce here, I have persuaded him to Ship <mutilated> and give me an order, which he has done. Capt. Brown has four heavy hogsheads of his made on very rich fresh Fauquier land. He proposes to be an annual Shipper to you for this purpose and to get his goods on the best terms. Mr. Bell has forgot to order insurance, but I advise you to make it. I have proposed the same thing to several of my Tenants. Since my draft on you in favor of Mr. Russell, the matter stands thus, remitted Charles Raysons Bill on your Self for £33.13 Sterlg. Capt. Parks Ship bill for £57.1 Sterlg. and Mr. Bells order for £16.10 Sterlg. Cash furnished Colo. Francis Light. Lee here for your use 429 dollars and £1.6 paper currency. The paper at 30 pr. Cent & These dollars I am to be credited for at their sterling value when Capt. Mitchel of the Argo arrives in London, because if they had not been wanted here for your use, they were to have been remitted you in that Ship. That agreement we formerly acquainted you with.
During the whole Winter, until this fortnight<,> the Waters have been all bound up in Frost <so> that Capt. Brown has not been able to do any <thing> in the way of getting Tobo. on board. Now I hope he will go on quickly, and altho by this unlucky & unusual hard frost he will probably be after his lye days, yet not so long I trust as to make any difference with the Charter parties.
Russels Ship Caroline is arrived, no letters from you nor account of your Potomac Ship.
Our love to Mrs. Lee and the Doctor, not forgetting our little new Cousin. Farewell.
Your affectionate brother.
R. H. Lee
P.S. Mr Ponsonby has never sent me my Sons accounts. I insist on his doing this. NOTES:
