Washington College Lexington VA: 17 Feb - y 1870
Dear Sir
I have rec - d by the hands of Col: Mc Culloh the two volumes you have presented to the Library of Washington College, a copy of your Philological Essays & of your Latin Grammar. They are highly valued for their intrinsic merit & for the kind feelings their donation evinces towards a state for whose benefit the labours of your early life were so well bestowed, & by whose people your memory is still warmly cherished.
I beg also to return you my sincere thanks for the kindness extended to Col: Mc Culloh in his visit to London & for the interest you take in Washington College.
You will lay me under additional obligations if you will when convenient present my regards to your former colleague Professor George Long & my grateful thanks for his excellent translation of the Thoughts of the Emperor M. Aurelius Antoninus; my acknowledgements for which I hope has reached him. Wishing you great happiness and continued usefulness
I am with great respect your obt servt
