Dear Sir
I do not know what rule is now followed in making appointments in the U.S. Army. Formerly vacancies were filled by the graduates of West Point, & as necessity required, by the appointment from civil life of 2nd Lieutenants to the several arms of service.
I cannot say whether you would be acceptable to the appointing powers or not, but think it probable you would meet with obstacles to your application. Whether the duty would be pleasing to you, you can best decide, & I know of nothing I can say to assist you in making up your mind, & there is nothing I can do to help you in obtaining your object -
Wishing you all happiness & success in life I am very resp - y
your Obt Servt
