In compliance with a resolution of the Faculty of Washington College passed at their last regular meeting, I have to present their thanks to the Faculty of the University of VA: for their invitation to attend the closing exercises of the University the present session; and to express their regret that duties public & private prevent them from accepting it, though it is hoped that several individual members will be able to be present on that interesting occasion I have the honour to be Your obt Servt

The envelope with this letter is postmarked "25 Jun, Lexington Va." A 3-cent stamp is imprinted on the envelope. It is addressed to "Dr. S. Maupin, University of Virginia." On the left side of the envelope is the following printed notation: "Return to Washington College, Lexington, Va., if not delivered with 10 days." In script is written, "Gen R. E. Lee."
