Phila Octr. 13th. 1781
Sir,
The Contents of the inclosd appear of such Consequence, that two expresses are immediately to be sent of[f], one to proceed by land, the other by water from the Head of Elk. We have likewise thought it proper to forward Copys to you, not doubting, but that you will think the intelligence of sufficient Consequence to require a fast sailing boat to be dispatchd with it to the Count de Grass, least the Letters sent by the President shoud meet with some delay.1
We have the honor to be, with the greatest respect, Your Excellencys Most Obt. Servts,
Danl. Carroll
John Hanson
Receiver’s copy, Maryland State Papers (Red Books), Maryland Hall of Records Commission, Annapolis. Written by Carroll and signed by Carroll and Hanson.
1 For "the inclosed" letters of October 4 and 7 from an anonymous informant and Gen. William Heath respectively, copies of which are in the Red Books, MdAA, see the preceding entry.
