Mr President

I recd today the letter from Genl Longstreet to which you referred in your note of the 28th Ulto - I have proposed to Genl Grant an interview, in the hope that some good may result, but I must Confess that I am not sanguine. My belief is that he will Consent to no terms, unless Coupled with the Condition of our return to the Union. Whether this will be acceptable to our people yet awhile I Can not say - I shall go to Richmond tomorrow or next day to see you, & hope you will grant me an hours Conversation on the Subject - Genl Longstreet proposed that I should meet Genl Grant at the point where he met Genl Ord, & desired to have two or three days notice. I have therefore appointed Monday next for the interview with Genl Grant. With great respect
