I enclose you recent dispatches received from Genl. Stuart - They leave little doubt in my mind even as to the possibility of the truth of Genl. McClellans grand movement across the James river to Richmond. Such a movement on his part is hardly possible, but in the uncertainty as to whether they will be required in advance, I have determined to retain for the present in their present positions the commands of Magruder, Huger, D. H. Hill & Ransom - I shall probably myself go farther down the river in the course of the day, unless other information detains me here. I have the honor to be
